As part of the Management and Innovation MGT 320 spring semester class with Prof. Reding, I was placed in a group with 3 other classmates and volunteered to be project manager. Sam, Will, Riley, and I were tasked with innovating for a local hemp company Pure Shenandoah. This would be a semester long project where we would have to consult them with a detailed and strategic new product to introduce to their product line. Upon hearing our task, our team started to discuss our favorite animals, and we came to the consensus that birds are really cool. From that first off topic meeting, Flock Consulting took flight. At the end of the semester, our team earned the Management and Innovation Product Pitch Competition Champion of our class.

With an incredibly talented group, we hit the ground running. Weekly meetings were not productive in an academic sense because we only occasionally discussed the project and reached shared how their work had been coming along. In those couple hours a week we spent together, we valued connecting with each other far more than the final grade. In this time we learned about the goals, strengths, and weaknesses of our team members, helping us work together more efficiently. A majority of the real project work was done on our own time. This rather unconventional and "unproductive" meeting style proved to be incredibly successful.

Our goal was to not only get a good grade but pitch a product we all loved and believed in. We got creative, met our deadlines, and had a lot of fun together and got to know each other over the course of the semester. My goal for this semester was to learn more about designing packaging and branding along with becoming a better leader to unite a team around a common goal and achieve that goal. I improved on my leadership skills and learned a lot about how to effectively delegate tasks, set expectations, and help my team members strive to reach their personal goals for the project.

Flock Consulting pitched a gluten-free flour alternative made from whole hemp seeds. Our team earned the title of Management and Innovation Product Pitch Competition Champion, voted on by the employees of Pure Shenandoah.
