Farming Through Film
shot on 35 mm film
"Our Oysters are Shuckin Good" says Myles Cockrell through an accent one can only get from being the fourth generation of family of Chesapeake Bay oyster farmers. Since the 16th century Myles' family has farmed oysters in and around the Wicomico River on the west bank of the Chesapeake Bay, just south of the Virginia and Maryland line. Lil Wicomico Oyster Co. provides freshly shucked oysters to countless restaurants and customers. One steamy July morning, I had the privilege of joining Myles for a morning of pulling oyster pots and a tour of his oyster processing facilities. Mr. Cockrell's understanding and passion for oysters is like no other. It's no surprise that the Cockrells have been farming oysters in the Chesapeake Bay since the 16th century.
